There is a sweet spot between a front door that says “Halloween is here!” and one that has so much going on you don't know where to look. 😂
But here's the thing — there really isn't one right way to decorate your front door.
Some of us love pumpkins everywhere. Some want one cute Halloween piece on the door and call it done. Some love spooky, some love whimsical, and some of us will put leopard print on just about anything if given the opportunity. 😉
For me, the best front doors aren't about following decorating rules. They're the ones that make you smile when you pull into the driveway.
Here are a few easy ideas I use when I'm putting a seasonal look together.
Start with something you love
I usually start with the piece that made me want to decorate in the first place.
Maybe it's a door hanger. Maybe it's a wreath. Maybe you found the cutest pumpkins and the whole porch grew from there.
For Halloween, something playful on the door can set the mood before you add another thing.
This week's Feature Friday, our Boo Crew Truck, is exactly that kind of piece — a smiling witch, jack-o'-lantern and black cat piled into a purple truck and ready for Halloween. It's fun and whimsical without making the whole porch feel spooky.
Let the colors talk to each other
You don't need a decorating formula.
Just look at the piece you're starting with and pull a few colors from it somewhere else on the porch.
With Boo Crew, that could mean purple mums, orange pumpkins, a black-and-white mat, or whatever you already have that makes the whole thing feel connected.
And if you love ALL the Halloween colors?
Use them. 😂
Your front door should look like you, not like somebody else's decorating checklist.
Mix things up a little
One of the easiest ways to make a porch interesting is to give your eye different things to see.
A door hanger brings attention up to the door. Pumpkins or a fun mat bring your eye down. A lantern, planter, mum, sign or porch leaner can fill in somewhere between.
You don't need all of those things.
Sometimes one beautiful piece on the door is enough. Sometimes more is more and that's exactly the look you're after.
The goal isn't perfection. It's creating a space that feels welcoming when you come home.
Handmade brings its own personality
This is one of my favorite things about creating hand-painted décor.
I can cut the same design more than once. I can use the same colors. I can follow the same pattern.
But when I'm standing at my paint table with a brush in my hand, every one develops a little personality of its own.
That's part of handmade.
Your piece wasn't pulled from a stack of identical finished decorations. I painted it for the person who's going to open that box and put it on their door.
And I think that's pretty special. ❤️
Make your front door somewhere you enjoy coming home to
Seasonal decorating doesn't have to mean redoing your entire porch.
Change the door hanger. Add a pumpkin. Move something you already own. Bring out a favorite piece from last year. Add something new that you couldn't resist.
Or go all out.
It's your porch.
The best seasonal decorating is the kind that makes you happy when you see it.
